Where’s Your Treasure?

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.”

MATTHEW 6:33 (NASB)

This verse is at the end of the passage where Jesus is talking about worry. I won’t ask the question “Have you have ever worried?” because if you didn’t ever worry, then I’d think something’s abnormal about you. I think the only one who never, ever worries is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Because they’re perfect and don’t worry, but I also believe we can arrive at a place where worry gets canceled out of our own lives.

Scripture shows us that one of the biggest things that makes us worry is money. Here is how Jesus starts it off. This is crazy — so in verse 19, He says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” Do you know why? Because treasures on Earth are a target. They’re a target because if the enemy can touch you there, he can touch you in your heart.

Jesus continues in verses 20 and 21: “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” He says in verses 22 and 23, “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then, if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”

Jesus is talking about treasure, and He’s talking about God being your biggest treasure, because you are God’s biggest treasure. So He’s talking about where our treasure is, our heart will be also. The enemy wants to target us like he did with Job, for instance. It’s kind of crazy because no one wants to go through what Job went through, but the reality of it is this: The devil didn’t come before God and ask for Job. God pointed Job out. (Look at Job 1:8.) We’re not all taught that, but when satan presented himself before the Lord, God said to satan, “Have you considered My servant Job?” I mean, how many of us want that? What if God said, Have you considered my servant Todd? Have you considered my servant (fill in your name here)? No one wants that. Why? Because when we get pointed out like that, we’re thinking, The enemy is going to get me. But do you want to know what I think? I’m thinking, God pointed me out — that’s awesome! Are you with me? Because when you understand your identity, you understand that your Father actually takes pleasure in pointing you out. He’s proud of you!

Do you understand that the devil takes a risk every time he touches you? When he touches you, if you respond in God, he’s in big trouble. But he’s not used to people responding in God. Come on. What was satan’s accusation? That Job feared God for nothing because he had it made...That the moment he lost everything, he would certainly curse God. That’s the wisdom of the world — all wrapped up in possessions and self-centeredness. James 3 says that the wisdom of man is self-seeking, it’s sensual, it’s demonic, it’s full of selfish ambition, and he says that confusion and every evil thing is there.

We’re all born with it — the wisdom of the world. We need to get born again and get that thing out of us. Are you with me? I want to encourage you today to lay aside the treasures, worries, and temptations of this world, and focus on laying up treasures in Heaven souls. Let your focus be on God’s Kingdom and His righteousness — He’ll take care of your earthly needs.
